Opinion: Rabbinical Couple’s Special Food ‘Fight’ | The Jewish Exponent.
The Jewish Exponent has been running a series of articles about the food stamp challenge in Philly. This article caught my eye — it was nice to see someone start out with one opinion and then have an experience that causes them to “get it.”
I never completely understood who qualifies for food stamps. Generally, if you receive SSD/SSI, you’re not allowed to collect food stamps on top of this. It’s generally understood that the SSD/SSI amount should cover rent, food etc. However, through my work, I’ve seen people get both.
Even with food stamps, it’s very difficult to live on those amounts. Some disabled are fortunate enough to receive Section 8 vouchers (generally pays 70% of rent) and the remainder is used for food, clothing etc. For those that are on a waiting list for Section 8, the $637+ barely covers rent.
